What is Panchang?

Panchang is the Hindu almanac. The word comes from Sanskrit: "pancha" (five) + "anga" (limb). The five elements of every Panchang are:

  • Tithi — The lunar day; 30 tithis make up a lunar month.
  • Nakshatra — The moon's position in one of 27 lunar mansions.
  • Yoga — 27 yogas determined by the combined longitude of sun and moon.
  • Karana — Half a tithi; 11 karanas cycle through the lunar month.
  • Vaar — The day of the week.

All Panchang calculations on Muhurtas.com are based on the principles in Jean Meeus' Astronomical Algorithms and traditional Vedic astronomical texts. We calculate Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, Rahu Kaal, Gulika Kaal, Yamaghanda, sunrise, and sunset for your exact geographic location.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are muhurat timings calculated?

Muhurat timings are computed using the traditional 30-muhurat system dividing the day from sunrise to the next sunrise. Each muhurat spans approximately 48 minutes and carries its own quality — from Ati-Shubh (most auspicious) to Ashubh (inauspicious). The quality is determined by the ruling deity of each muhurta.

What time does Rahu Kaal occur?

Rahu Kaal occurs every day but at a different time depending on the weekday. On Monday it falls in the morning (roughly 7:30–9:00 am), while on Tuesday it falls in the afternoon (roughly 3:00–4:30 pm). The exact timing shifts daily based on your local sunrise, so always check your location-specific Panchang.

How does Vikram Samvat relate to the Gregorian year?

Vikram Samvat runs approximately 57 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar. The Gregorian year 2026 corresponds to Vikram Samvat 2082–2083. Hindu months combine both lunar (tithi-based) and solar reckoning, so the New Year date in Vikram Samvat varies each year by the Gregorian calendar.

What information do I need to generate a Kundli?

An accurate Janam Kundli requires your date of birth, time of birth (as precise as possible), and place of birth. Without a birth time, a chart can still be generated, but the Lagna (ascendant) and house placements will be uncertain. Even an approximate birth time within 30 minutes can significantly improve accuracy.
